Common Questions about the Halo Maps Websites

Q) Who owns the Halo Maps Websites?

A) The Halo Maps websites are owned and operated by UXB Internet a Website design and Hosting Company (http://www.uxbinternet.com/) as a courtesy to the Halo community.

Q) Who is this “Dennis” guy that moderates the web forums?

Q) Dennis is the owner of UXB Internet and by extension the owner of the Halo Maps websites.

Q) Is Dennis his real name?

A) Yes it is.

Q)  Is this a “for profit” website?

A) No. The websites exist because we like the Halo game and in particular the Halo CE game. The website is operated at our expense and has been designed with minimal advertising. Any advertising revenue or donations we receive goes to cover the cost of running the website and file archives

Q) How much does it cost to run the Halo Maps websites?

A) More than most could afford and just a little bit less than it costs to buy a new car.

Q) How much exactly per month does it cost?

A) Pushy aren’t you? The Halo Maps websites are run by UXB Internet and it is the company policy to never divulge any company financial or detailed technical information.  Sorry.  However you can find out yourself: Just price what it would cost to lease three servers with the ability to serve over 15 Terabytes of data a month.

Q) FifteenTerabytes a month?  Do you really use that much? How much bandwidth do you use?

A) Actually we use more than 15 terabytes a month in bandwidth. We average between 15,450GB - 18,000GB a month in bandwidth depending on the season (when people are in school).

Q) What does the Halo Maps system consist of?

A) We operate dedicated servers to run the websites and deliver the files.  One server is the web server that hosts the websites, the web forum and the primary file store. The files are mirrored on other servers and delivered via both HTTP and FTP.  When you click on the download link on the website the website server talks to the file servers to see which one should deliver the file and then sends you to one of them.

Q) Why don't you host map packs?

A) We do not host map packs because they take up too much space, are too large to effectively transfer, take too much time to download and duplicate what is already in the map archive.  Besides most no one can agree on the maps to put in a pack so you would be downloading maps you don’t want and using our bandwidth.  As counter-intuitive as may seem it is actually faster to download them one at a time than to download them in a pack.

Q) Why don't you use Bit Torrent for the files?

A) Bit Torrent is an excellent method of distributing popular files in a short period of time, however relying on it to be the sole delivery method for the over three thousand files going as far back as Jan 2005 is not a workable option for a file archive.  Bit Torrent was designed for brief swarming behavior and not for variable intermittent selections and downloads

Q) When  I  click on a download link the download count does not change.

A) That is correct. We update the download counts from the file servers once each night. At around midnight EST the website queries the file servers for the actual completed download counts and updates the website database.

Q) Is there a free copy of your website available like PHP Nuke?

A) No.  The Halo Maps websites are designed using propriety web based applications designed by UXB Internet using the Cold Fusion web application language.  The website and backend code is copyrighted by UXB Interent.

Q) How do I become a member of the website?

A) There is no membership (at this time) required to download files from the website. The only place you need a membership is for the Web forum.  We do not allow people to post information unless we have some way of contacting them.

Q) Can I become a moderator in the web forum?

A) No.

Q) Why not?

A) Only employees of UXB Internet may have any access to the administration tools of the Halo Maps websites.

Q) Can I donate money to the website?

A) Yes. We do accept donations to help us defer the cost of the bandwidth and running the website. Just click on the white "donate" button and you can use either paypal or your credit card to make a donation.

Q) Do I have to donate a specific amount?

A) No. You can donate as much or as little as you wish however anything less than $3.00 is absorbed in the transaction costs.

Q) Where do you get the map files? Do you make them?

A) The map files are made by individuals like yourself using the Halo Editing Kit available from the website. The files are uploaded to us by the map authors and we host them for download. We do not make the maps we just host them for download.

Q) Do I have to pay to have my file hosted?

A) NO.  This is a hobby website and we do not charge the map authors to host the files for download.

Q) Can I upload and host any file I want?
A) No. We only host maps, files and assets used with the Halo Custom Edition (CE) game, the Halo 2 Vista game, the Portal Game and various Halo based Machinima and videos. All maps and files are reviewed by the Halo Maps staff for suitability and we make the determination if and when a file gets hosted. See the hosting guidelines on the Upload files page.

Q) Can you help me make a map?

A) No. We do not make the maps we just host them for download. You can ask questions in the user forum or visit the tutorials section of the website for additional information on making maps.

Q) Can you modify a map for me.

A) No. We do not make the maps we just host them for download. You can ask questions in the user forum or visit the tutorials section of the website for additional information on making maps.

Q How do I use the tags I downloaded from the website?

A) Tags can not be added to compiled maps. Please read the header text at the top of all Tag sections.  We do not make the maps we just host them for download. You can ask questions in the user forum or visit the tutorials section of the website for additional information on making maps.

Q) Why don't you host modded maps for the Halo PC retail game?

A) Modding the Halo PC retail version of the game is a direct violation of the copyright and End User licensing agreement. We only host files we know conform to the restrictions of the EULA.

Q) Why don't you host modded maps for the Halo Trial game?

A) Modding the Halo Trial version of the game is a direct violation of the copyright and End User licensing agreement. We only host files we know conform to the restrictions of the EULA.

Q) Can you give me a Product Key so I can install Halo CE?

A) NO! In order to install the Halo CE (Custom Edition) game you MUST own a copy of the Halo PC Retail version of the game, have the Halo PC Retail version CDROM and the CD Product Key number which is printed on the yellow sticker labeled "Product Key".  You MUST have the CDROM inserted into your CD Drive to install and run the game. If you do not have the physical CDROM and the correct CD Key you will not be able to install or run the game. Buy Halo PC
